Singer/songwriter Kimm Rogers joined us on our Tower Instagram Live show, hosted by Whitney Moore, to talk about her recent single and video for "Lie", a political Pop song that expresses a lot about the state of the USA right now. It builds on her previous album release, Where The Pavement Grows.

During quarantine, Rogers has adopted a rescue dog and taken up more essay writing to keep sane. But she's really been affected by things like the Trump campaign since the very beginning. She was disturbed in the early days that news organizations wouldn't call Trumps' many untruthful statements a "lie". Working on "Lie", she had friend Kelley Ryan help her with an extra verse of rap for the song. The song sets the stage for an EP that's forthcoming buy she felt very much like the song "Lie" needed to come out now, as well as the video.

The animated video, created by Cathryn Beeks, was created quickly to put it out before election day. During these crazy times, Rogers' only real request was that some lies be featured throughout the video to illustrate life right now, but otherwise just wanted Beeks to "have fun".

Rogers' songwriting process varies by song, but it often starts with an idea for a chorus or a line. Then she tends to "fast write" off of ideas and pick from the results. Sometimes songs seem to write themselves, and she can't really explain that! But "Lie" was a bit of a struggle because she wanted to keep the lyrics simple and stay away from overwriting. The song, actually, doesn't have to be political at face value, since it could also refer to relationships, though Rogers does intend for it to be political in the way the video clarifies. Humor, however, also plays a big part in her music, and humor also plays a "huge" role in her life. "Humor saves you", Rogers feels.
