Yo Kinky Shared Their Layered Sound Inspirations On Tower's Live Show + Performance!
Newly formed Queens, New York-based duo Yo Kinky joined our Tower Instagram Live show, hosted by Whitney Moore, for a discussion of their latest single, "Someone I Used To Know" (which Tower Records' PULSE! debuted right here) and to let us in on some of their plans for an upcoming 2021 EP! And Tom Unish and Laura Wight also shared a performance with us, from a very fine set up at their favorite local venue, of "Someone I Used To Know" and a bonus new song!
Tom and Laura have similar tastes in music and had each written songs before they met each other through a local venue in Queens, about eight months after Laura had moved there after several years in Paris, France, before which she had a band as a teen in LA. Tom has a lot of background in music Production, having worked at studio audio engineering, being in and out of bands, and doing tech for touring. Up until the pandemic, he did live sound for events for quite a while as well as working on a solo project.
Yo Kinky are actually totally finished mixing and mastering their upcoming EP, working on things during the pandemic because it just felt like the right time for them. The "sonic palette" of the EP is "pretty similar" to what we're hearing in "Someone I Used To Know", Tom says. Layered sounds, with synths and guitars, are their jam right now, but each of the songs has different stylistic elements, like a Beatles record, where you see a lot of genre experiments coming from the same sonic roots.
