Some people are bound to wonder why a man only a few months short of eligibility for the senior discount is putting out a first album. Most musicians of my age have given up music, retired to the continent, taken up blogging on the net, settled on the Indian Casino Circuit, or some combination of these four. My producer, Lon Osgood, voiced this inevitable sense of puzzlement when he asked not only why I waited until I was so old to assemble this collection, but also why I waited so long to write some of the recent songs that are included here; inferring that had I been a few decades more prompt, I might be living in much less humble surroundings. Lon's question was posed during one of the lighter moments in the songwriter-producer relationship, but the answer gets to the heart of some relatively serious matters, or at least they are serious to songwriters. The songs in this collection have been essentially created by the life I have lived; by the times, family, faith, and country into which I was born. These songs are not an autobiography, but I believe that I could have written none of them had I led a different life, nor could I have written any of them before I did. I also have a strong sense that I am passing them on rather than originating them; that they are a gift from God, and that they acquire value primarily in being shared. I hope that each of you will find some piece of your own life in this collection, and be encouraged by knowing that you are not alone.
