The Dream Cabinet review by Darren Bergstein, e/i Magazine Robert Solheim, tapped in to his nom de disque Current, has been quietly releasing quality electronic fare since the late 90s, not that anyone's noticed. Most of his early releases could be found on the always reliable Norwegian Origo Sound label, but he's chosen to release The Dream Cabinet (as well as the previous Undercurrents) on his own. Whether or not this gets him more broadly heard will be difficult to ascertain; regardless, the ambient techno coarsing through the grain of The Dream Cabinet, though hardly groundbreaking, is so engaging and sumptuously crafted you could forgive Solheim for his lack of innovation. Undulating synth pads flutter beneath softly throbbing sequencers and the kinds of 'antique' 80s keyboard signatures, beloved of everyone from Gary Numan to Robert Schroeder, bounce and chatter throughout. Exquisitely crafted genre music of a particularly fetching sort, The Dream Cabinet explores willowy ambience and plush velvet rhythms with equal aplomb, the sort of record you might expect little from but which surprisingly rewards endlessly enjoyable dividends.
