The search for a French repertoire for trumpet and organ in the 20th century leads unavoidably to composers such as André Jolivet (1905-1974), Henri Sauget (1901-1989), Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) and Jean Langlais (1907-1991). Their compositions often arose from the contacts with the most brilliant interpreters of the 20th century, above all Maurice André (lots of works were dedicated to this musician, for example the "Semaine Sainte à Cuzco" by Henri Tomasi). The new expressive possibilities of the trumpet, such as for example the use of the various mutes (Tomasi makes use of the "suordine Robinson" and the "sourdine ordinaire"), the tremolo and the glissando, as well as the use of the piccolo trumpet (an instrument, which was made at the beginning of the 20th century and employed in the "Semaine Sainte à Cuzco"): all these aspects and devices inspired French composers during the 20th century. This recording is based on Jolivet's composition "Arioso Barocco". It's execution is rather difficult because of the experimental and innovative intentions of the work, a typical feature of this author's mystical poetics. All the other composers proposed in this CD (from the modal "Variations grégoriennes" to the popular "Semaine Sainte à Cuzco" by Henri Tomasi and the simple intimacy of the "9 Pièces" by Langlais) are evidence of the revival of a repertoire expressly written for trumpet and organ, this after a very long interval when a lack of interest had been predominant. The recording was made in August 2012 in the church of Magadino (Ticino, Switzerland). Experts in organ music appreciate this valuable instrument, a Mascioni organ built during the years 1951-1965; this is why one of the most important Swiss organ Festivals regularly takes place in this church. The age and the sounds available on this instrument, as well as the favorable acustic, seemed to the interpreters the ideal conditions for an appropriate recording of the selected works.
