Big Medicine Head rolled out of Santa Cruz, California and rambles on a path that stretches east to New York and north to Seattle. San Jose's Metro called their first album 'the finest slice of Americana since John doe's first album.' 'The Queen of the Western Hemisphere' marks the return of Big Medicine Head and songwriter Robert Gemmell, after a prolonged absence. As Gemmell notes in the CD insert 'there's a line from now to a long time ago, and I wrote these songs to trace it's arc'. From the infectious opening riffs of 'Twilight Barking Chain' to the joyous mandolin driven finale 'Words Never Get in the Way', Queen of the Western Hemisphere hangs as a smoke stained protrait over a bar, where Hank Williams leans into a deep conversation with Joe Strummer. QWH draws on influences that include Paul Westerberg, the Waterboys, Son Volt, Tom Waits and Graham Parker.
