BIOGRAPHY Like a scene from a jazz gangster movie, Rod Buckner dove trumpet in hand behind the drum set to avoid the storm of bullets hitting the stage. Fresh out of college in the early 70's, Buckner was gigging around Denver every night with a 10 piece band, jamming hard on Isley Brothers and Tower of Power grooves. No one was seriously injured, but Buckner did catch a round in the knee. 'Buckylove' as Rod is known in Denver, survived that gig, bullets and all, and together with his brother, Ron 'B6' Buckner, formed the 8 piece funk/jazz machine known as BUCKNER FUNKEN JAZZ. BFJ has built a solid reputation at the best Colorado venues for their well honed, supremely funky stage show. BFJ Delivers Old School Funk with such authenticity and intensity, that they are known to keep the crowd Funken for hours - nonstop. Their sets can blow up the party or implode with quiet intensity, seamlessly transitioning through Miles and Monk to Maceo, and back again. Reviews "This was my first experience with a musical hurricane. To say this band blew my hair back is a gross understatement. This band is in a class way above the first three acts I saw that night. It is a collection of seven highly skilled, well-seasoned performers who express a diversity of style and musical genre unmatched by anyone the duck has ever seen before. I believe these folks do Old School Funk as it is SUPPOSED to be done. Their delivery of a groove is the groove I've always looked for, but few musicians could quite produce. The "Jazz" on the end of their name must not be taken lightly Interspersed with the thumb-slap-funk bass lines were intricate morsels of what some of us call Real Jazz. The horns in this band teased me mercilessly with deep statements of the heritage of Jazz and Soul. Snippets of "oh, my, what was THAT?" tickled my innards in ways so good it was almost embarrassing. Combine the Funk, Jazz and Soul with a generous dollop of high humor and stage presence and you do indeed have a musical hurricane that took me places I've always longed to go" Ducky Brady - Independent Reviewer 'With so many young groove and jazz groups trying to sound old-school, it's nice to hear a band that actually is old-school: Denver-based Buckner Funken Jazz, whose leader, trumpeter Rod Buckner, was grooving on stage back when Medeski, Martin and Wood still had 8:00 bedtimes." Greg Glasgow - Boulder Daily You like funk? If there's ever any question of who's the funkiest jazz band in town, Buckner Funken Jazz answers with absolute authority. Rod Buckner, the founder and leader of this act, is flat-out scary on his trumpet. Whether he's weaving in and out through harmonies on a Miles tune or burning through some James Brown, he'll knock your traditional-jazz-loving socks off. Bassist Ron Buckner AKA (B-6) is always in the pocket, and melts into the rhythm section like a stick of butter on a hot plate. The Buckner brothers, together with their band mates- make up one of the few groups in town who can masterfully transition from Parliament to Charlie Parker and back to the Funky Meters. Shawn Bauer - WESTWORD 'True to my word I listened to BFJ's latest CD Get'cha Groove On! And it is SMASHING from beginning to end. The quality of the mixing and mastering are as good as it gets and is seriously top-notch. Lots of great material to draw on for the WAVE!' Love and Waves ~ Carmen The Colorado Wave There are several bands that have thought combining Parliament-style old-school funk with jazzified sensibilities would be a great idea, but there are few who can do the trick without looking like a sniveling bunch of jazz-fusion wannabes trying to be like Buckner Funken Jazz. Sure, the band has everything a jazz aficionado would ever want, be it well-polished ivory tickling or bluesy trumpet work -- both flavored by practiced musicianship -- but then again the group isn't caught up in the jazz hype. Underneath the keyboard melodies and the hot trumpet creeps groove-worthy bass lines and some sexy, pure funk guitar work and that is all backed up by a always in the pocket drummer and conga player, old school funk and jazz played as is it suppose to be played. Despite it's jazz/funk pedigree, Buckner Funken Jazz doesn't slip into the oft-abused strains of fusion, a mercy that keeps the act from sounding too derivative and from whirling off into the annoying recesses of jazz-snob obscurantism. - Matt- Independent Reviewer After BFJ played a flashy opening set for funk legend "Maceo Parker," Maceo wasn't sure if there was anything left to play. "Did you guys leave any FUNK for me?"
