Canadian-born Hazzan David Propis learned the cantorial art at the feet of his father, the late Hazzan Dov Propis, and studied voice with Metropolitan Opera diva, Elena Nikolaidi. While serving for the past 19 years at Congregation Beth Yeshurun in Houston, Texas, he has built an international concert career. Blending popular and cantorial music seamlessly, he has shared the stage with numerous luminaries including Dave Brubeck, Julie Budd, Jackie Mason and Yaakov Smirnoff, appearing frequently in the major halls of the U.S., Europe and Israel. Hazzan Propis continuously entertains for major Jewish and non-Jewish organizations as well as being in constant demand by his beloved Houston Astros and Rockets for his powerful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. New York Times columnist Allan Kozin called his performance at Carnegie Hall 'stunning ...ebullient.' Hazzan Propis produces numerous faith-based recordings, including all 11 of The Spirit Series CDs for the Cantors Assembly and United Synagogue. They have been distributed to millions of homes throughout North America, which have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for these organizations. He also is the founder, creative director, and managing partner of The 3 Jewish Tenors, a symphonic musical event. This concert event, along with several others, including Kindred Spirits of Los Angeles, have raised millions of dollars for synagogues, Jewish Federations and Jewish organizations, such as Jewish Family and Career Services throughout the United States. Hazzan Propis has himself recorded more than a dozen albums. His latest CD is entitled 'Power of Forgiveness: The Spirit of the High Holidays' and includes your favorite settings of prayers we have come to know and love from the High Holiday experience. This has been a passion project of his. Other CDs include 'Together as One,' a duet CD with Hazzan Alisa Pomerantz-Boro, 'Visions of Shabbat' and 'Visions in Prayer,' both composed and arranged by Cantor Meir Finkelstein, as well as 'The 3 Jewish Tenors - LIVE!', and his Yiddish CD 'Inspirations - Memories of Home.' Among his many honors, Hazzan Propis is a past president of the Cantors Assembly, the largest body of cantors in the world, co-chaired both Poland and Germany Cantors Assembly missions, was named to the task force to restructure the cantorial school at JTS, received the Hiddur Mitzvah Award from Masorti Olami, the Hazzan Moses Silverman Service Award from the Cantors Assembly, and received an honorary Doctorate from JTS.
