It isn't an easy thing to stand alone, before an audience, with just a song and a guitar. That's what the father is doing. The father will turn 60 this year. His life is proof of the saying that a working musician is a professional driver who gets to play a little music. He has always been there, steering wheel or guitar in hand. He was young when he started. And it's a young man's game. When you are young, the miles are shorter, the dark is less dark, and the weather feels kinder. When you are young you have more time for the weather. When you are young you have more time for everything. The father knows that he's in a young man's game. He knows because time is different. He knows because now the math is different. He knows because he is now, himself, the weather. He knows, because everything he has ever seen or done, is now a part of him. He knows because his songs now come from places deeper in the muscles and at the core of the marrow. The songs come from places where it takes decades for the heart to reach. He has always had songs, songs with wings, songs that shine, songs as intricate and webbed as frost on double-paned glass. He has had love songs. He has always had love songs. He has never had these love songs. These are a father's love songs. He knows he's in a young man's game. It is enough to say that the father is still standing. It is enough to say that night after night, song after song, the father is a man who can stand before an audience with just his voice and a guitar. It is enough to say that when he plays the guitar he invites the blues and touches the dark. It is enough to say that when he sings he brings back the light. It would be enough to know that after over 40 years on the road, through the weather, he is still here. It is enough to say that the father writes songs. But there is more. The road is hard, dark and wind whipped. Time is a different calculation every day, every week, every year. It's easy to lose the way. It would be easy to forget where he's been. He finds it hard to remember where he is going. But the father always sings these songs of love. These songs are signposts on the way home. His daughter sings along. His son carries him. His friends live forever. His wife is his one true love. The father always comes home. Nathan Bell (The Liner Notes) February 2014.
