Musically and lyrically evocative, the songs of singer, songwriter, and composer Dan Yurkofsky incorporate ideas from a number of musical genres including folk-rock, ambient, new age, and musical theater. This new CD, 'Hoverhill, songs of Dan Yurkofsky volume 1' is the first full-length collection of his songs. Although he grew up in Westchester County, New York, and now resides in New York City, many of the songs are inspired by life in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he lived for several years. The instrumention on 'Hoverhill' is generally sparse; a keyboard, guitar, cello, voice, and occasional synthesizer provide the pulse, harmony and sonic texture for the songs. The lyrical subjects to the songs on Hoverhill are often contemplative. There's "Walking", a meditation on being left behind in a fast moving world, several ruminations from the open road ("Wyoming", "Middle of the Road", "Home'), and reflections on the twin towers and events of Sept 11, 2001 ("Where Rivers Meet"). Dan is joined on the record by several musicians from the New York folk, jazz, and classical worlds: Matt Turk - guitar, Anna Dagmar - keyboard, Noah Hoffeld - cello, and vocalist Melissa Stylianou - who sings the opening track, 'Wyoming'.
