Darryl Alexander: Transitions

Darryl Alexander: Transitions
Title: Transitions
Label: CD Baby

Chances are that if you have watched Saturday Night Live (NBC), Good Morning America (ABC), The Weather Channel, E Entertainment, Lifetime, Fox Business, Maury Povich, or flown on Continental, Airtran, Frontier, or Jetblue that you have heard Darryl Alexander's music. "Transitions," the new contemporary jazz record from Darryl Alexander features performances by Kenny Blake, Ken Karsh, Brett Williams, Pete Tokar, Wilber Krebs, Fred Ervin, Joe Graziosi, John Madgett, and Brandon Howard. "What I enjoy working with this group is there is a lightheartedness in their soul, and it comes out in their performances," says Darryl. I remember Kenny Blake saying one day in the studio that EMS personnel see some pretty horrific things every day. As artists we have an opportunity to make someone's day just a little bit lighter, little bit easier, even if just for a moment. Wilber has a wonderful garden which kept us well fed, and the big surprise was finding out who Brett's grandfather is. "Transitions" opens with "On E. Street" which is a hip, fun song that is very danceable, and one which is a favorite of DJ Funky (Jeff Fuller) and certainly will get you on the dance floor. Hey Senorita is a modern samba selection that really grooves and is a salute to the Latino culture. No Turning Back is a driving, funky tune that captures the essence of contemporary jazz. The blending of jazz with funk, hip hop, latin, rock and r&b are what made the songs on this record fun to record. "Transitions" was recorded and mixed by Pete Tokar at The Reel Thing Studio. Pete has a number of gold records to his credit, including many of Gerald Levert's recordings, Bones, Thugs & Harmony, and Tyler Perry projects. Pete's mixes are tight, and he nips things in the bud when recording. Buddy Hall of Beacon Hill in Pittsburgh, PA also recorded several tracks and has a way of causing everyone to relax and have an enjoyable time. A welcome addition to this record was mastering engineer Martin Walters, who has mastered many gold records. It was a privilege to be able to work with this wonderful cast of musicians and made the recording of "Transitions" more about the fellowship of friends, new and old, who just happen to be musical artists. Very interesting is the fact that during his college years (Kent State University) the first band that Darryl was a part of (Love, Life, and Light) featured In Living Color comedian AJ Jamal on keyboards and renown poet and KSU professor Mwatabu Okantah on percussion and lead vocals. Kent was the launching ground during this time for many of today's renown performers, such as Steve Harvey and Arsenio Hall. Darryl's other life passion is reflected in his work with inner city at risk youth, as well as serving as a federal grant reviewer for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). Darryl also is invested in the work and mission of the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation.
