I currently live in Bellevue Washington with my wife and son. I was born and mostly raised in Phoenix, Arizona. Graduated from Saguaro grade school and Moon Valley High School. I first learned to play the guitar as a junior in high school (1976) when I picked up my mothers 1958 Harmony archtop f-hole jazz guitar. Learned the required John Denver songbook and some Jim Croce tunes. After high school there were a few open mic nights and some jam sessions with local acoustic artists, but life started calling and music became a hobby instead of a profession. I moved to Washington in May of 2001. I continued to play off and on (mostly off) until I married my wife Diana in 2003. With her inspiration the passion for writing music began again. Since June of 2003 I've written about 50 or 60 songs and these are some of them. I Write using a Martin Cowboy II, and record using a Gretsch Jumbo cutaway. One of the reasons I named the CD 'one man show in a one dog town' was because I did all the recording work on the CDs, played all the guitar tracks, sang lead and harmony vocals. Took most of the pictures, designed the cover and burned the CDs. So it really is a one man show at the moment. The CDs were recorded using a Tascam 8-track DP-01 digital recorder. Then transfered to wav files with Nero Wave editor and burned onto CD-R using Cakewalk Pyro. I also design my own web pages and others on a 'not quite for profit' basis. I've created pages for some of my friends including -Bill Hranek - a Musician and DJ in Phoenix, Arizona. And Bob Debruyn - a Painter and Musician in Seattle, Washington. About the songs: One Man Show. - My favorite kind of music is the old folk style of one person and one guitar, which I tried on a couple of occasions in the late 70's. Portrait of Milton - A friend of mine had to have her dog put to sleep and the only way she could get through the grief was to paint portraits of him. That's how I intended to write the song. It ended up being a love story of two people who met on a bus a long time ago and now exist only as pictures hanging in a hallway across from each other. Old Jeans - It's the age old story of comfort over style and I made it a love song as well. True, it's not the most romantic of subject matters but what the heck. End of the Dirt Road - my first collaboration and one of my favorites. A friend of mine wrote a rant on a message board. She started out complaining about how expensive everything was for high school seniors. She ended up almost in tears because her son was growing up so fast. I knew exactly what she felt because my son is in the same spot. She had so many good lines that I used in writing it, that I credit her with collaboration. Ten Yards Down. - A bitter sweet dog tale. I went to visit my nephew one day and being in his early 20's he was not home much, so I just said hi to his dog Clyde. I remembered leaving my old dog with my parents when I left home many years before. So this is the result of those thoughts. Gene Autry. - Whenever I sing this I dedicate it to my father. Who I see as a cross between Gary Cooper, Stan Freberg and Henry Mitchell (Dennis the menaces' father). Quiet, solid, patient, and funny. Gene was one of his childhood heroes as well as mine. Disappear. - When I moved from Arizona to Washington I left behind one of my best friends. A heck of a nice guy stuck in a life filled with insane people. He was always working on this old truck and glad to offer a beer no matter what time it was. The verses are a conversation I had with him one morning when I came back to visit. The chorus is what I would have been thinking if I had been in his shoes. Goin To Arizona. - It's the story of my wedding and honeymoon. Jacksons Cafe. - I belong to a message board at jacksonscafe.com. This song about how music affected me when I was young and rediscovering the passion by accident one day. Let go the world. - This song is about letting things go. Diana had a red Chevy blazer that we sold because we couldn't take care of it like it should be cared for. Our dog Teddy had been my constant companion since 1989 and he passed away in April of 2004. We got a new dog right after that named Maggie (the one on the front cover). And our son will be going away to college in the next year or two. Never Thought to Ask. - I went to high school with a guy named James Janzen. He was a pilot and took me up in a Cessna single engine and I borrowed my Dads 8mm camera to photograph the 'hop'. James passed away from leukemia a few months before our high school 10 year class reunion. 1958 Archtop. - The first guitar I ever played was a 1958 Harmony archtop f-hole jazz guitar that my mother bought before I was born. This is my homage to that guitar. I also named a CD of instrumentals after this. Garden Angel - A song about rescuing a statue someone left by the side of the road. A Gift to Take. - A poem set to music. What if you got to choose what gifts God give you - this is my 'what if'. Walking Distance. - This describes 3 bars in Arizona that I used to frequent in the early 80's. The Metro Lounge, Dizzys and Westown lounge. 2 of them are no longer there, I have not checked on Dizzy's yet. Watercolor Life. - Sometimes you look back at your own life and it looks different somehow. Like a watercolor painting. Family Reunion. - For too many years I could never go visit my parents or brother and I missed watching my nephew Jeff grow up. So after I wrote this I sent my mother the first copy. 13th Love song - A simple sweet John Denver type song with a twist. I hope you like em as much as I do. Doug.
