Much of the Saint Louis, Missouri music community was devastated to learn of Dave Hagerty's automobile accident death in early August, 2010. Memorial and benefit events were arranged immediately and became well-attended and heartfelt affairs. At one such event, buoyant pop-rocksters Fire Dog won the privilege of some studio time in a raffle. With it, the decision to dedicate the resultant recordings to Hagerty's memory was made, and the Wait To Die seven-inch is the result. The title track pops along merrily, an upbeat anthem with a "carpe diem" attitude to match it's theme of living in the now. Mark Pagano's ska-pop guitar hooks and earnest vocal manner mesh soundly with Celia Shacklett's ooh-ahh harmonic backing vocal and driving bassline. The able timekeeping of drummer Brandon Manitoba rounds out the track with purposed restraint and unleashed (and occasionally booming) facility, as appropriate. A particular highlight of the record is the closing track, "Jorge," a poignant piano-pop- and doo-wop-inspired slow-dance number penned by Hagerty himself and lead-sung in this case by Hagerty's surviving girlfriend Ellen "The Felon" Cook. The breathy and passionate delivery of both vocal and piano movingly underscores the song's heroin-addiction premise, and the lush, layered production makes for an acutely heartrending exploration of Hagerty's songwriting. By their own declaration, Fire Dog's mission is, as ever, to "[spread] positive vibrations through songs of truth and intrigue to make the people dance!!" With the emotive and versatile Wait To Die seven-inch record, whose production start to finish has been infused with the help of friends and family in the music community in Saint Louis and beyond, it's safe to say "mission accomplished."
