Gladys Knight & the Pips: Letter Full of Tears

Gladys Knight & the Pips: Letter Full of Tears
Artist: Gladys Knight & the Pips
Title: Letter Full of Tears

Bobby Robinson was one of the original music entrepreneurs, opening a record store in Harlem in 1946 (it finally closed it's doors in 2008) and launching the first of his several record labels in 1951. Fury Records was set up in 1957 and enjoyed a number of hit singles and would eventually release two albums, one of which was Gladys Knight & the Pips' debut album Letter Full of Tears. The album was something of a parting shot for Gladys, who left the group shortly after recording in order to raise a family, although as we now know, she would later return and help the group become a major success. The album contains the hits Every Beat of My Heart Letter Full of Tears and Operator as well as Guess Who, also released as a single. Whilst the group would later become the epitome of polished soul, there is rawness to these recordings that only adds to their appeal.
