Houston native David William Kearney first came to prominence at the age of 16, playing explosive lead guitar with the Walter Johnson band in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. The act was billed as "The Walter Johnson Band featuring Guitar Shorty" and the name stuck. He steadily began to garner accolades from his peers and, soon after, he joined the Ray Charles Band for a year. He recorded his first single in 1957, "You Don't Treat Me Right", for the Cobra label under the direction of Willie Dixon after Dixon saw him playing with the Walter Johnson Orchestra. Eventually, he joined Guitar Slim's band and moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. Guitar Shorty has remained active over the years and has most recently made an alliance with the Godfather of swamp funk, the great Swamp Dogg. So, what happens when you take one of the world's greatest and funkiest blues guitarists and turn him loose in the Godfather of swamp funk Swamp Dogg's studio with a pair of Jimi Hendrix's iconic hits? Pure swamp-funk heaven, that's what.
