The dense, atmospheric The Smack by House of Black Lanterns aka Dylan Richards (King Cannibal, Zilla) evokes shades of early Chicago house but with a thoroughly modern UK twist, cutting through so many genre sounds, from dub techno to dubstep, while sounding entirely unique. Mosca plumbs the Basic Channel school of sound for his Dread at the Controls version, with spring reverb and droning synthesizers. The shadowy techno of Grey Leather Glass is like a score to a Wes Craven slasher epic, and 8 Million Stories cuts up vocal chops, finger snaps, and piano stabs over a brooding house production.
