The short, atmospheric vignettes on Google Search & Destroy mark a bit of strategical departure for the normally sprawling Igod. Instead of working all the variations of a theme to it's logical conclusion, most of the tracks here are only long enough to build atmosphere, then it's on to the next idea... The net effect is much like listening to an isolated film score -- that a journey has occurred through the passage of scenes rather than within the scenes themselves. Igod has also allowed for a majestic sparseness in the interaction of a small number of distinct elements rather than his previous method of cramming as many layers of variation into a track as possible. The last third of the disc is particularly surprising (and rewarding) as longer textures emerge, dominated by the actual playing of notes rather than music that is implied by sounds. But as the titles of the tracks suggest, Igod is also paying a great deal of homage to his predecessors in both electronic and experimental music. Subtle and often whimsical references abound but never overshadow the implicit sadness that is sculpted through these haunting motifs.
