"She grew up tall and she grew up right, with them Indiana boys on them Indiana nights," sings Tom Petty in his classic song, Last Dance with Mary Jane. Indiana Boys takes it's name from this iconic line, paying tribute to Petty's quintessentially American body of simple, heartfelt, and exquisitely crafted work. Indiana Boys aspires to capture that same spirit in their own original songwriting, while also bringing to bear their Southern Indiana roots music influences. Though they utilize acoustic instrumentation often associated with bluegrass or Old Time music (acoustic guitar, bass, mandolin, and banjo), the band prefers to claim the label of "roots music" or Americana for their style. While a discerning listener can certainly detect the influence of great bluegrass pioneers like Bill Monroe or Earl Scruggs on some of their songs, one can just as easily find traces of folk, pop, rock, and country artists like John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, Alabama, U2, Dave Matthews, and (of course) Tom Petty. For Indiana Boys, the first step in making great music is writing great original material, and they pursue that goal with little regard for staying within the lines of any particular musical genre. With most of the band members contributing songwriting, the music bends and sways to fit each member's unique musical background and sensibilities, creating a body of work that is refreshing in it's variety while remaining recognizable as an organic whole. Over the last two years, the band has evolved from a loose, rotating group of jam buddies into a steady core of five musicians, Richard Gist, Kenan Rainwater, Joe Bolinger, Dan Bilger, and Barry Elkins. They released their first two records, Muddy Boots and October Nights, in 2012; both received significant local radio play and won several awards. They have also performed extensively all over Indiana, including sharing the bill with nationally touring acts like Rev. Petyon's Big Damn Band, Kenny Chesney, The Travelin' McCourys, and Rascal Flatts. Indiana Boys' third record, This Modern World, debuts in September 2013. Influenced by their surroundings, families, and experiences on the road, this next album is sure to be one you don't want to miss.
