Produced and arranged by Jeff and Mark Heckert, Begin Again features 13 originals, representing Jeff's return to recorded and performed music, and the opportunity for fans and new listeners alike to hear his unique voice and emotional songs. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Jeff Scott began singing, playing guitar and writing songs at the age of 8. He formed his first band at age 12 (with the slightly strange name, Nimbus), and evolved the group into a sought-after local act at age 15, leading a nine-piece group with a full horn section through his graduation from high school. During a short break from college, Jeff formed a folk-pop duo that played clubs and restaurants throughout Michigan. While working in advertising following college, Jeff entered and won Detroit radio station WNIC-FM's search for the area's best singer and recorded an original song, "Show A Little Faith," with producer Dan Yessian. The recording held the top requested slot at the station for months, and the exposure created the opportunity to appear nationally on "Star Search," hosted by Ed McMahon. Following this experience, Jeff released his first album of original music, working with friend and engineer Jeff Briggs, and received positive reviews in The Detroit Free Press and The Metro Times, and airplay on local pop and jazz stations. During this time, Jeff's voice was in demand with Ortheia Barnes, Millie Scott, Earl Klugh, Ursula Walker and Buddy Budson, Perry Hughes, Thom Hall and other luminaries of Detroit's jazz/r&b scene. In the late 1980's, Jeff took advantage of a Detroit club owner's request to feature a true house band, and with singer-songwriter Duane Allen Harlick, formed The Big Picture. As co-leaders and the primary songwriters, they evolved the group into a high-energy six-piece unit defined by a superior level of musicianship and a refined pop-soul sensibility. After a few short years of honing their sound and material, The Big Picture became the national winners of the Marlboro Music Talent Roundup and took on opening act duties for Hall & Oates, Eddie Money, Richard Marx, Smokey Robinson and others. The group then entered the studio with Jeff Briggs, and renowned producer Andre Fisher (Rufus, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole) and engineer Jeff "Woody" Woodruff (Chicago, David Foster) to complete their eponymous debut album, supporting sales with appearances at large regional festivals and continued opening act appearances, while beginning to field calls of interest from Los Angeles and New York. A desire to change musical direction led Jeff to leave The Big Picture and take a step inward, writing a collection of lyrically complex, heartfelt songs which he recorded in New York City with award-winning producer Roger Tallman but did not release. Jeff then made a major change and pursued a business career, fell in love, started a family, and ultimately realized--thanks to them--that his true calling was music. We hope you enjoy the results.
