WELCOME TO YOUR NEW FAVORITE CD!!!! Jen Crumbacher has been making music her whole life, having grown up in a large musical family in Washington State and later in New Mexico. Her folk roots were established early on by her Dad, who was her first guitar teacher, but she has studied and loved different styles of music throughout her life, including jazz, gospel, bluegrass and classical. Although Jen plays a number of instruments, including guitar, her primary instrument is her amazing, angelic voice...it is a voice that has a mesmerizing effect on listeners, drawing them into her world of rich emotions, tender truths and subtle playfulness. Having walked away from a full scholarship at New Mexico State University, where she was majoring in classical vocal training, Jen eventually moved to California in 1995 (at age 24) and continued her musical path in a variety of styles, including choral singing, a cappella (world music, jazz, pop), folk and bluegrass...participating in several recordings along the way (arranging, singing back up and lead vocals, and playing guitar) and continuing to gain musical maturity, her own unique style of songwriting and delivery, and many talented musical friends and contacts in northern California. Jen's first solo recording, 'Every Sweet Surprise', brings together some of those brilliantly talented players for a stunning debut...this rootsy blend of Americana, folkgrass, acoustic swing and folk-pop is a lush, irresistible collection that will stay in your CD player for months! Each new song truly is a sweet surprise as Jen takes you on a journey that effortlessly glides from one style to the next, even including one a cappella song that will have you grinning from ear to ear. Equally at home singing swing, pop, Scottish ballads, and folkgrass, this artist's command of her voice and joy in using it come across with a graceful, beautiful strength. The collection includes seven gorgeous originals and a sprinkling of favorite covers, giving us a true sampling of this artist's varied passion and skill. Her songwriting style will draw you into the story, perched on the edge of your seat...and in the end you'll be left wanting more...moved to smiles, tears, introspection and hope. The accompanying instruments are absolutely perfect for the song choices. Guitar, mandolin, dobro, fiddle, cello, upright bass, and minimal, tastful percussion bring us a sound that at times brings to mind Alison Krauss and Union Station's impeccable, bluegrassy playing. Scott Wylie sings harmony on most of the songs, and their voices blend and complement one another in that spellbinding way that is usually only reserved for siblings. Truly a treat for the ears! Jen and Scott also worked together to arrange the harmonies and most of the songs on this album, and their talent in arranging is quite evident. You'll find yourself singing the songs as you go about your day, unable to get the melodies and hooks out of your head! 'Every Sweet Surprise' was co-produced by Jen Crumbacher and Barry Phillips, recorded at Bear Creek Studio in Santa Cruz, California by Barry Phillips, with additional recording at Slipperworld Studio in La Honda, California by Charlie Natzke, and mastered by Rainer Gembalczyk at Sienna Digital in Menlo Park, California. Jen currently resides in Scotts Valley, California, and continues to write, arrange, and record music.
