Born in 1952 in Argentina, José Luis Merlin begins his studies of the guitar at the age of 5 with Maestro Vincente Degese. In paralell, he studies harmony, counterpoint and morphology with Leonidas Arenda and after he improves his technique with Abel Carlevaro. Since the age of 9 he performs in public concerts in Argentina, Europe, North and South America and also in Australia. At each concert, he is highly praised by the critics and they recognize in him an excellent representative of the Latin-American culture and they underline his excellent technique. José Luis Merlin gives recitals; he often plays in duet guitar-flute; he can also be heard as soloist with chamber or symphonic orchestra. In addition to the traditional repertory, he naturally privileges works of South American composers. José Luis Merlin animates musical workshops open to students as well as professionals. In those workshops he teaches the technique of the guitar, the rythms of Argentinian folk and the work of South American composers. José Luis Merlin already recorded a large number of CDs of which Traversia was named for the first price 1993 by the Association of Musical Critics.
