It all began on Mack St. In Windsor, Connecticut, where assorted aunts, uncles, and cousins shared the neighborhood with Ksenia's own family. Tuesday nights found the entire crew gathered at Ksenia's house with aunts on piano and drums, Dad on trombone, and Mom on washboard. Eventually, Ksenia joined in on guitar. While getting her degree in classical guitar at U Conn, Ksenia covered the local bar circuit and gave numerous interviews on college radio stations, and opened for Arlo Guthrie while still in her teens. Ksenia moved into the Boston music scene, and developed a strong solo career with regular appearances at Passim, Cape Cod Melody Tent, Music Circus, and Paradise Rock Club. Over the course of her career, Ksenia has opened for Willie Nelson, Indigo Girls, Warren Zevon, Marc Cohn, Robert Cray, The Guess Who, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Ferron, Paula Poundstone, Aleka's Attic, Aimee Mann, and Marti Jones. She has also performed with Patty Griffin and Catie Curtis, and was a Lilith Fair Finalist. Ksenia's love of playing with others has led her to extend beyond her solo career and join two groups, Acoustic Brazil and Porch Party Mamas. The Mamas, in particular, hold a special place in Ksenia's heart. "I'd have these parties, and by the end of the night everyone was on the porch playing music," she says. "When four of us decided to start a group, we already had the perfect name." The Porch Party Mamas perform regularly in the Boston area, while Acoustic Brazil, a cultural education program for kids, performs at schools and libraries. "I never really thought about doing anything else," says Ksenia, cradling a guitar in her lap. In fact, over the course of our two hours together, Ksenia plays me several songs on both guitar and piano, and even takes a turn at a large upright bass holding a position of honor in her own living room. Clearly, the lessons learned early in life, and the music that came with them, are still with her. Ksenia Mack and her husband Robert Castagna are also founders of Boston Art Life, a website and social network devoted to fostering the creative lifestyle.
