Waverley Station: First Stop! New sets for Scottish Country Dancing: Jigs, Reels, Strathspeys, and Waltzes David Knight, fiddle / Liz Donaldson, piano / Ralph Gordon, cello and bass Historically, Scotland has been among the most dance-mad cultures to share it's music with the planet. We are thrilled to bring you Scotland's dance-driven repertoire, throwing in great tunes from Ireland, Canada, and America for good measure. The tunes on this recording have entered the tradition at some point in the past 400 years. Early sources include The Lute Book of Gordon of Straloch (1580-1661), which gave us the tune 'I long for thy virginitie' (track 5). The new, Italian design of the violin entered Scotland in the mid-eighteenth century, generating new musical forms such as the uniquely Scottish Strathspey. It also unlocked great creativity in composers such as Robert Macintosh (track 4), Robert Petrie (track 3) and William Marshall (tracks 3 and 4) and continued to inspire their musical heirs such as Robert Lowe (track 9). We also included the mouth music of the Western Isles of Scotland (S' ann an Ile) (track 9), the fiddle music of the Shetlands (Jock Broke da Prison Door) (track 11), and music from Scotland's great bagpipe tradition (Donald Macpherson's The Curlew) (track 10), As much as we love the old tunes, we also love tunes coming out of the modern end of the tradition by fiddlers in Scotland (Ian Hardie) (track 10), Canada (Richard Wood) (track 6), and the United States (Rebecca Pringle (track 6) and Barbara McOwen (track 11)). Both of us have been personally and profoundly influenced by the clearing that Barbara has made for Scottish dance music in America. This tradition has provided inspiration for our own musical compositions, some of which we included in these new sets. But the real energy of the music comes from the dancers who use it to fly... We thank you for sharing flight with us. David and Liz, September 2002 WAVERLEY STATION fuses the exciting musical energy of Liz Donaldson on piano and David Knight on fiddle, regularly joined by Ralph Gordon on cello and bass. Based in the Washington, DC area, WAVERLEY STATION has been playing together since 1999. With nearly a century of dance and music experience amongst them - taking them to every continent but four - Liz, David, and Ralph truly enjoy playing not only Scottish, but also English and American contra dance music. When not playing as Waverley Station, they follow their own individual muses into genres as diverse as Swing, Irish, Klezmer, American Folk, and acoustic rave. If it's Waverley Station on the stage, you are sure to leave wanting more!!! 1. 8x32 Reels: 4/4 Marches [4:45] If It's Not Scottish....
