Borrow or Lie is a blend of sass and sentiment, hope and heartbreak, yearning and regret. In a bed of country, folk, soul, and rock, this Mississippi-raised artist lays out songs she compiled over the course of two years while stumbling aimlessly in life, never seriously pursuing a career in music. After being urged by friends and supporters, Monroe finally gathered the guts to start recording. She found an innovative, yet sensitive recording engineer to do her project--Justin Douglas of Shine Studios. 'I knew he was the one for me. He talked to me like I knew what I was doing--even though most of the time I didn't.' Douglas urged Monroe to ignore her lack of technical jargon and focus on the heart behind the sound. For 'Yankee Boy,' Douglas asked Monroe to describe the sound she was looking for. 'I want it to sound humid,' was her response. Experienced, tasteful Austin musicians came out of the woodwork to play on the tracks and gave the album it's multi-genre complexity. Songs like 'Fallen' and 'Why' divulge an intense vulnerability, whereas Monroe's brassier self is expressed in 'Whiskey Smile.' The finale of the album, 'Red Bird,' is her pride and joy. 'I wanted to end the album with something epic--a big bang,' Monroe states. ' I wanted to seal it with one of the biggest lessons I learned from love.'
