Today, Jean-Baptiste Lully is present on the stage and on disc as a French composer known primarily for his operas. We forget that he was born Giovanni Battista Lulli in Florence in 1632, and owed his fame as a European composer to the scores printed by Amsterdam publisher Estienne Roger, who published instrumental arrangements for orchestra of Lully's operas and ran a professional dispatch system with deliveries in London, Cologne, Berlin, Halle and other European musical centres. It is thanks to baroque orchestra Capriccio's discoveries that now, centuries later, we can finally hear Lully's music as it sounded in European courts around 1700.
