Marc Brenken Trio: It Could Happen to You

Marc Brenken Trio: It Could Happen to You
Title: It Could Happen to You
Label: CD Baby

Marc Brenken (piano, composition) is constantly developing his own musical language since his studies at the Folkwang Acadamy of Music in Essen, Germany. In 2006 his debut CD as a band leader and composer, 'eight short stories' (Marc Brenken - Christian Kappe Quartet), was released. He made productions for the WDR radio, the Literaturkommision für Westfalen, and was involved in the score of the succesfull movie 'Sonnenallee'. Alex Morsey (double-bass, tube) also studied in Essen and is simply one of the most adept and inventive jazz musicians on the scene. He played with stars like Clark Terry, Ack van Rooyen or Herb Geller and toured throughout Europe, America, China and Thailand. For his groups 'Un Tango Mas' and 'disguise' he also works as a composer. His playing is documented on more than 20 cds. Marcus Rieck (drums) studied at the Acadamy of Music in Cologne and already in his younger years has played with well-known artists of the German jazz scene (Johannes Enders, Martin Sasse, Matthias Schubert a. o.). Like only few drummers he contrives to bring out the best in a band and make it swing. He is also a steady member of the Steve Klink Trio, Lars Duppler's 'Palindrome Sextet' and the Benjamin Schaefer Trio. PRESS QUOTES 'Fabulous keyboard magic' (Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung) 'As unusual as his body language are the short stories that pianist and composer Marc Brenken tells (...) stories that characterise him as a highly enjoyable author.' (Münstersche Zeitung) 'an exciting musical journey that offers quite a few dicoveries.' (Jazzpodium) A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE COMPOSITIONS DURCH DEN REGEN FAHREN (RIDING THROUGH THE RAIN) - for example on my bicycle through the warm summer rain, then taking off the wet t-shirt to feel the fine drops of water and the wind on my skin... IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU - while we were mixing, Udo suggested to name the record after this well-known song by Jimmy van Heusen. I liked the idea, because this phrase describes my life at the time when the music of this album became reality quite well. J & M - dedicated to pianist Jason Moran and guitarist Marvin Sewell. I wrote the tune after a concert of 'The Bandwagon' at the 'Stadtgarten' in Cologne (feat. Tarus Mateen, bass and Nasheet Waits, drums). END OF A DAY - one evening, when I was listening to the recording of this piece, with a glass of wine on the sofa, I thought: this is the perfect moment for this song. RAUS AUSM BETT (GET OUT OF YOUR BED) - inspired by Kenny Werner's composition 'The Look' from the album 'A Delicate Balance' with Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette. I've been admiring Kenny's playing and writing for years. LAUF DER ZEIT (THE COURSE OF TIME ) - about the melancholy that occurs to me once in a while when I think of past times. SHANDA'S SPRING SONG (GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT) - I wrote this one for a concert reading of the children's book 'Freiheit für Shanda' (Freedom for Shanda) by Wilhelm Gruber. This story is about a wild horse foal that is brought up by Sükhe, a little Mongolian nomad boy. Shanda was forcefully separated from her mother and is held in captivity. The song describes the moment when Sükhe finally succeeds in encouraging Shanda to drink water for the first time. Everybody is relieved. ERBSE I'M HOLZHAUFEN - sorry, this is untranslatable. If you'd like to understand the title, you'll have to learn some German first ;-) RAINY DAY - finally another song about the rain, this time a slow one.
