This debut disc hardly sounds like what you'd expect from an independent disc, which is Calhoun's first time out of the chute. Part of that may be the able assistance she received from Jonathan Yudkin, who seemed to take part in much of the album, but the majority must be credited to the poise, excellent voice, and writing exhibited by this Virginia-based songstress. The cast of supporting characters here is stellar. They take their turn in the spotlight and then drop back to provide unusually strong support playing as a group. The 13 songs contained here are crafted stories, all of which she either wrote or co-wrote. She is definitely, by voice, on the country side of Nashville; however, there are times that she leaves out the twang and moves more into a blues rhythm. The songs are varied as to tempo and pace, with some -- such as ' Time Will Tell' -- exhibiting a very 'island' feel. Some of them have a very personal story to tell; however, they are told in such a way as to be accessible to a large audience. Even though that twang hints in her voice a good part of the time, the sentimentality associated with that twang is happily missing. -- Bob Gottlieb, All Music Guide Review.
