I think I write best when I write about others and the journeys they take, literally or figuratively. I hope you will enjoy these three recent pieces. Marjorie, October, 2010 Rhoda's Waltz (composed January, 2010) This waltz honors my aunt Rhoda Soren Hinckley, who died on January 4, 2010, her 87th birthday. This piece starts off in a minor key to show sadness at her death, but ends in a major key to show happiness that she is at peace and to celebrate how wonderful she was. The Lady of the Loch (composed July, 2010) This piece is meant to describe the 2010 nesting season of the oldest nesting osprey in the United Kingdom, known to many as 'the Lady of the Loch.' Her summer home is at the Loch of the Lowes near Dunkeld, Scotland. This year she arrived, hatched two chicks with the help of a new mate, and then fell gravely ill towards the end of June. When all hope seemed lost, somehow she found the fortitude to glide to the lochside and to take some drinks of water. She slowly recovered from that point, and was able to finish raising the chicks and leave on her migration to Africa right on time. She is not tagged so there is no way to tell if she still survives -- we must wait and see if she returns to the Loch next March -- but the events of this year show that one should never give up hope! Love in Cremona (composed September, 2008) This waltz was written in honor of the wedding of the luthier who made my violin, Hildegard Dodel of Cremona, Italy. Hildegard married her husband Fabrizio in May, 2008. The waltz has an 'A' part and a 'B' part which, the third time through the piece, are played simultaneously. On this track, the violin that Hildegard made for me is played by my violin teacher, Dan Compton.
