Composer, Arranger and Alto Saxophonist Matt Wates is joined on the album by longtime sidemen Martin Shaw on trumpet and Malcolm Creese on double bass, as well as the exciting pianist Leon Greening, tenor saxophonist Steve Main and drummer Matt Home. The Matt Wates Sextet's music has been described as "an infectious bled of Jazz Messengers - Style bebop and West Coast cool, with a funky rhythm and blues thrown in. Bassist, producer and record label boss Malcolm Creese considers "Yemanja" to be "the group's finest album yet," adding: "The band's line-up has been consistent for a number of years now and the ensemble playing is very tight. Matt's arrangements are beautifully created and the music really rocks!"
