Corey Turner, known to most as Matta Fact, found his love for hip hop music during the early 1980s. This was the era when the culture and lifestyle of hip hop was inescapable, attractive and magnetic to the youth who gravitated to it. Young Matta Fact knew he was destined for limelight, with dreams of being the best MC and most famously respected. Honing in on the skill of rhyming, spinning records, and producing, as well as drawing, painting and playing instruments, Matta Fact embraced hip hop and art, and refused the idea of limitations. As his lyrical abilities matured, his perception of the music industry developed with him. After researching many famous rappers he had admired as a child, he began to believe that the glamour of the music industry was not what it had been glorified to represent. Matta Fact questioned whether it was necessary to involve any record labels at all, making creative freedom his main priority. In 2002 Matta Fact independently released his first album, "The Illregular MC", produced primarily by Dublohskytzo & V-Sharp. The credits contained a bold statement, "Signed to Myself Records." He hadn't started a record label, but had nurtured a movement. This meant that musicians wouldn't have to strive to join a pre-existing industry, but could produce & distribute their own music and art. The album included only one featured artist, MC Literal, a long-time friend/rapper now known as Xander Johnson. Well received with songs such as, "Noise" and "The Fact Remains", this album was placed on consignment locally and sold out without any promotion. Matta Fact also designed the art for the album, which he literally cut out himself with an X-Acto knife and coaxed in to every CD. Without having the tools for mass production, less than 1,000 CDs were actually manufactured, making this album a rare classic. Shortly after the release of, "The Illregular MC", Matta Fact graduated from the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC, and then moved across country to work for a well-known design firm in Los Angeles, California. Design and music opportunities once again brought him back home to the DC area, but at the peak of his career, Matta Fact was faced with a challenge he never expected to encounter. In his early 20's Matta Fact was diagnosed with kidney disease. It was a battle unlike any other he had ever experienced, yet he found inspiration in the music and stories of other musicians like J Dilla, who at the time was also fighting the effects of kidney failure. By focusing on the things he loved the most, family and music, Matta Fact persevered through illness, dialysis, and a kidney transplant to release his second album, "Mr. Sunshine", which was only downloadable on Bandcamp.com. A few years later, Matta Fact seized the opportunity to build upon his original concept and dream, and recruited a talented group of artists and business professionals to legally form Signed to Myself LLC (S2M). Today, as a CEO, graphic designer, producer, and hip hop artist, Matta Fact firmly represents the balance between life and unrestricted creativity. He has inspired listeners through his uniquely distinguishable lyrics, addictive music production and intensely vivid graphic art. His visionary foresight has liberated many artists to share their music, art, and various talents without the scrutiny, politics, and diluted messages. On June 1, 2014 Matta Fact will be re-releasing a double album, (the Illregular MC & Mr. Sunshine), "Matta Fact Deferred". This will be his first largely distributed album. CD's and downloadable MP3's will be available on signedtomyself.com, iTunes, Amazon, EBay, Google Play, Spotify, Rhapsody, and many more websites. Although Matta Fact Deferred will not be distributed by major retail chains, the album will conveniently be available to the world at the click of a button, making Matta Fact's most contested goal of independence, a reality for everyone to witness.
