Mexican Gunfight is an American rock band formed in Portland, Oregon in 2006. The lineup consists of singer-writer-bassist Dave Coey, singer-guitarist Al Toribio, singer-drummer Ned Failing, and keyboardist Mike Walker. Band History Coey, Walker, and Toribio had been members of The Renegade Saints, a band they performed in regularly from 1991 until it broke up in 1996. They met Ned around 1990 when he was a member of The Strangers, a rock band based in San Francisco. The Renegade Saints and The Strangers shared show bills on some 45 occasions. In Spring of 2006 Coey urged the others to meet and talk about forming a band. The stated goal was to have fun performing a mixture of cover songs, new originals, and favorites from the members' previous bands including The Renegade Saints, Kerosene Dream, The Strangers, Dixon, the Tremor Guild, and Nine Days Wonder. An increase in new original songs eventually inspired the band to focus on performing and recording those. In 2010 the band recorded three songs with David Kendall at his home studio in Vancouver, Washington but didn't release the songs to the public. Wanting a different sound and something they could give away or sell through their website the band began another studio project that December with producer-engineer John Askew. They recorded over the course of a year at Secret Society, Scenic Burrows, and Type Foundry studios in Portland. The result was a four song collection that was sonically disappointing but released through their website anyway for the sake of experimentation. The web release had no appreciable impact so the band set it's sights on releasing a full length recording using the better tracks they had completed from all prior studio recordings and adding new ones. In January 2013 the band enlisted Billy Barnett of Gung Ho Studio in Eugene, Oregon to co-produce a full length project by recording new songs from scratch, editing and re-recording parts of previous recordings, and mixing or remixing everything for commercial release. The resulting album was named "Long Play" and is scheduled for release in November 2014. The album name acknowledges the long period of time it took the band to complete the project. It is also a nod to their familiarity with the thought-to-be-dead-but-increasingly-hip vinyl LP, or long play, format. Mexican Gunfight's style and sound have been compared to contemporary acts Ryan Adams, John Mayer, Counting Crows, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Other comparable acts are The Wallflowers, Fastball, and Augustana. The band has many influences but the most relevant ones are '70s rock acts Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, The Band, Little Feat, The Beatles, Grateful Dead, singer-songwriters such as John Hiatt and Ryan Adams.
