You're gonna love Star of the Beach, this delightful new collection of songs by Miami Dan & The Hayes Street Band! For anyone familiar with their first album, A Time in the Spotlight, this new album ably demonstrates Miami Dan's further development as a songwriter and the tightness of his talented band. The songs' lyrics and lead vocals are compelling, and the fully realized array of melodies and instrumental and vocal arrangements richly complement the thematic content of the songs. If you simply enjoy good music, you'll appreciate the range of musical styles and influences within these new songs. They vary from Beach Boys-influenced surf music celebrating the magnetic appeal of the beach, to reflective songs about love and relationships, to up-tempo southern rockers, to topical songs about country and patriotism, and even a touching country-styled romantic duet. Similarly, given the extensive and wide-ranging musical influences throughout Miami Dan's life, take note of the diversity of insightful song references that he incorporates into certain songs. A variety of musical and lyrical references, ranging broadly from 'America the Beautiful' to Frank Zappa's 'Trouble Every Day' aptly reinforce the themes in the songs, more broadly expand upon key messages, or provide ironic twists. As you listen to the songs, keep your ears attuned for how many musical references and influences you can find and consider how each adds to the particular context or meaning of the song. Besides writing melodic songs with crisp arrangements, Miami Dan is a skilled lyricist. As a songwriter, Danny has the eye and pen of a perceptive writer and storyteller. Each song tells a story with poignant meaning, descriptive settings and imagery, and fascinating character sketches. Take note, for example, how Miami Dan frames the story line around the 'six simple rules' learned from a dying father's life's lessons in 'The Old Man's Rules'. Or notice how unscrupulous lawyers and politicians fare in topical songs like 'Age of Deception' and 'Take Back America'. Likewise, Miami Dan uses his songs to explore a variety of themes that many listeners will readily relate to. The appeal of the ocean serves as a symbol and catalyst for both romance and personal freedom, and it provides for the potential conflict between the two. For example, listen closely to the story lines in 'No Fear', 'Look East Again', and the engaging title song 'Star of the Beach'. Lots of people can relate to the story line in 'No Fear', with young adults being drawn from everyday inland life to the appeal of summertime beach life and 'living in the now', and of eventually settling down to adult life and harmoniously reconciling their past with the present. A number of these songs are also reflective in nature, looking back on life's experiences and lessons based on the insightful perspectives gained from advancing age and wisdom. 'Star of the Beach' and 'Old Man's Rules' are good examples of older men whose chosen ways of life lead them to ironic epiphanies late in life when it's too late to change their past. Similarly, '1944' explores a compelling story about a freedom-loving young man who suddenly had to grow up at age 18 when he was thrust into the horror of war during the Normandy invasion on D-Day. Eventually, the young man falls in love and marries, but before too many years his urge for freedom and his wanderlust begin to conflict with the stability of married life. Romance and lost love are also common themes in music, and so too in this collection of songs, but with Miami Dan's particular twists on these universal themes. 'She Was in Love' and 'Time to Move On' provide interesting contrasts in how such relationships may come to closure, one way or the other, over time. Note also the narrative descriptions and laid-back instrumental arrangements that tangibly establish the geographic and romantic setting for 'She Was in Love'. By contrast, the sensitive ballad 'Time to Move On', featuring a delightful duet with female vocalist Katey Randall, resolves itself quite differently. Particularly noteworthy in this song are the compelling piano and Hammond B-3 organ work of Nashville recording artist, Johnny Neel, which perfectly reinforce the sentimental, melancholy mood of the song. Miami Dan also has a keen sense of history and current events. Songs like '1944', 'Age of Deception', and 'Take Back America' have historical and political touch points ranging from World War II to the current state of affairs in the United States. Take note of the numerous presidencies that are specifically or implicitly referenced in these songs, and the historical or current events that help shape the settings and themes in these topical songs. The latter songs are rife with examples of recent characters and leaders who should be role models but who are often quite the opposite, to the detriment of our society. Note also the imagery and increasingly universal lyrical progression from verse to verse in 'Age of Deception'. Truly, everything is not always as it seems. In addition to his core band's instrumental and vocal contributions to this album, Miami Dan has gathered an impressive cast of guest musicians who performed on various songs and who also assisted with producing and arranging certain songs. Most notably, the influence of classic southern rock music on a number of Danny's songs sparkles with the engineering and production assistance of Paul Hornsby, who gained fame as a Capricorn records producer for groups like Marshall Tucker after previously performing with Duane and Gregg Allman in their formative early years as the group Hour Glass. Noted former Marshall Tucker and Outlaws vocalist and guitarist, Chris 'Hitman' Hicks, adds his distinctive stamp on several songs, and the bonus Hitman Sessions versions of several songs demonstrate his powerful vocal skills, ranging from straight-ahead rockers like 'Age of Deception' to the delightful country-rock duet 'Time to Move On'. Similarly, former Cowboy and Gregg Allman Band member, Tommy Talton, joins in with some distinctive southern rock electric guitar work on 'Look East Again'. Fans of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys will enjoy the distinctive musical contributions of talented multi-instrumentalist, Probyn Gregory, who performs on most songs. Likewise, similar to his impressive instrumental skills, Probyn's keen production and arranging skills add a distinctive flavor and Brian Wilson Band-influenced harmonies to the album's title song, 'Star of the Beach', and 'No Fear'. And original Beach Boys member, David Marks, lends his special guitar skills and background vocals on 'Star of the Beach'. Finally, a variety of other talented musicians lend a hand on a number of songs, as listed in the album credits. There you have it. Find yourself a comfortable chair and some good stereo speakers or headphones, and enjoy these delightful new songs from Miami Dan & The Hayes Street Band. -- Tom Tobben.
