Somewhere between The Beatles and Run D.M.C. constellations, at the axis where Jimi Hendrix and Dr. Dre meet Pixies and the RZA you might find a little shooting star, Colorado's own Mike Colin. Mike Colin is a rock and rap band rolled into one person. He's the rapper and the singer. He's the guitarist and bassist. Beats? He's got it covered by playing it himself or programming some DJ type gear. Piano and synth? Of course. But it's not because Mike feels that he can do as good or better than other musicians, 'I believe the optimum performance of music is generally going to be carried out by a group of talented people. My approach has grown from the songwriting side and wanting to make better and better demos, but more importantly it grew from the overall approach I use to make music in general which is to paint songs.' 'Paint songs?' 'That's as close as I can come to describing my process. I start with an empty canvas or a blank track and I fill that track with sound and thought until it is finished or is at a point where I can pick it up later and flesh it out properly. I don't write songs about most of the standard fare which is looking for new love, getting rid of old love, getting even with old love, dancing, drinking, yadda, so I'm not nearly as formulaic as your average 30 and 40 something hacks writing songs about high school and being cool or killing their livers slowly at some dank dive full of diseased genitalia.' 'Sounds a bit lofty.' 'And expecting others to be interested in something because you the reporter is telling them about it is not a form of egotism as well? All I said was that I think songs can be about more than the aforementioned dreck. All I do is actually make stuff not tell other people about stuff that someone else made.' 'Let's move on. Who or what motivates you in the here and now?' 'Just like most people I would say the relationships in my real life are what motivate 98% of what I do and don't do. Artistically I try to keep things quasi-random and that has it's own sort of fun motivation.' 'Your new songs for the all new CD later this year sound a little more refined and formulaic or shall we say traditional, did that come about in random fashion?' 'To a degree, I did say 'qausi' didn't I?...but no, this particular group of songs do have traditional structures and elements and it's not as if I've never done that before except for maybe I did not have a full set of them if you will. I think I've reached a point where I can make what I want to make but still give the audience what they want which I said I would do if I reached a point where there was an audience. You know, there is a difference in charging someone $5 at the door at any given space and the expectations therein but if you are charging people a serious price for a ticket then I believe they deserve the type of show they are generally expecting to get. Here-to-fore I had not necessarily been willing to give it and I've turned down appearances at bigger scale events because I knew I was not ready to put on that kind of performance but now maybe it's time if the audience decides it likes what I do.'
