Open Ended are: Mark Small- saxophones, Bass Clarinet; Asen Doykin-Piano, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Harmonium; Peter Slavov-Bass; Colin Stranahan-Drums. Coming together from diverse backgrounds that span not only geography, but musical influences, it might seem surprising to some that these musicians find common ground. In reality, they have the ability to use this common ground as a point of departure to explore the divergent paths that their collective musical ideas can lead. Whether raised by musical families or exploring the art form on their own, growing up in Eastern Europe or in the middle of the US, the paths these musicians have taken to this point have given them a unique voice on their instruments.  With this collective project, they stretch their conceptions further to find a common ground while helping to expand the boundaries of the other members of the band.  Their music bears the various styles of Balkan influences, earthy American folk, contemporary sounds, and a driving undercurrent of groove while finding a home in the straight ahead jazz tradition that brought them together.   The music that is a product of these influences continually inspires the musicians themselves which only adds to the energy of exploration that any audience immediately feels when they hear this band perform.  The music they create has the potential to move in any direction at a given moment. Individually, they have toured a greater part of the planet with a collection of artists that includes Quincy Jones, Joe Lovano, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Bennie Maupin, and Michael Buble. These artists have already made their respective marks on the music by releasing records of their own and leading bands.  They're now finding ways to combine these distinct voices to explore new musical terrain and understand each others disparate influences. The challenge can be in finding a way to have so many strong leaders sharing the stage but these musicians have the exceptional foresight to know when to shine and when to support.  The music of Open Ended is designed to allow the musicians to react moment to moment, realizing what the music needs rather than the individual.
