A 1961 film starring Spencer Tracy and Frank Sinatra, the Devil at 4 O'Clock is regarded as the precursor to the later disaster movies that dominated Hollywood in the 1970s. To score the film, the producers turned to George Duning, one of his last assignments for Columbia Studios before departing for a freelance career. Whilst he is primarily best known for his work with the western genre, his ability to conjure up images with his music irrespective of the subject matter really came to the fore on this soundtrack. He invariably kept the orchestral style simple, thus able to write music that was both warm and believable. Hallmark.
