A Russian-American pianist, conductor and composer, Ossip Gabrilowitsch (1878 – 1936) made his United States debut in 1900, came to live in the US at the conclusion of the first World War and was named conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He was llater co-conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra with Leopold Stokowski. He was the husband of soprano Clara Clemens, Mark Twain’s daughter. Presented here is a rare, historical recording of the maestro performing piano pieces by Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Schubert, Faure, Sapellnikoff, Mendelssohn, Leschetizky (whom he studied with) and his own Melodie in E Minor, Op. 8. All selections have been newly remastered.
