Don Scott and Michael Herring present their new jazz quartet and self-titled CD, Peripheral Vision"...lively counterpoint... with constantly shifting and inventive underpinnings." DownBeat Magazine "...contemporary grooves, colours and energy - cutting edge, but accessible sounds inspired by New York's downtown jazz innovators." The Ottawa Citizen "Balancing the cerebral with the visceral..." AllAboutJazz "Peripheral Vision" is one of the most exciting and innovative jazz quartets to have recently appeared on the international jazz scene. The creative leaders of the group (and long time musical collaborators) are guitarist Don Scott and bassist Michael Herring. The two instrumentalist/co-leader/composer/producers have assembled a synergistic musical unit that was designed to push the boundaries of jazz while remaining accessible by drawing on diverse stylistic elements. In creating the repertoire for "Peripheral Vision", Scott and Herring have composed challenging and melodic tunes that reflect influences from many of artists with whom they have shared the stage and recording studio, including cutting-edge New York City based alto saxophonist, David Binney. Scott and Binney appeared on both of Herring's "Vertigo" recordings - the recent Dark Materials and also Coniferous Revenge (one of AllAboutJazz-New York's "Top Five Debut Albums of 2006"), in addition, Herring can also be heard on Don Scott's critically acclaimed debut, Out of Line. The new quartet is beautifully completed by the inclusion of saxophonist Trevor Hogg and drummer Nick Fraser. The self-titled debut CD from "Peripheral Vision" is a sonic journey of contemporary harmonic complexity, elemental rhythms and breathtaking instrumental skill. Peripheral Vision is bound to be one of the top acoustic jazz recordings of the year-certainly a must for any serious contemporary jazz enthusiast. This recording and National Canadian Tour were made possible through the generous support of The Canada Council for the Arts, The Ontario Arts Council and Factor Peripheral Vision was produced by Michael Herring and Don Scott Recorded in February and October 2009 at Canterbury Studios in Toronto, Canada Engineered by Jeremy Darby Mixed by Jeff Elliott Mastered by Andy Krehm for Silverbirch Productions Art & Design by Jenny Francis for backyarddesign.
