Uncle Dick, as he was known to all of us, was the man who mined the rich "Jack Tale" lode that flourished in oral tradition on Beech Mountain in North Carolina. These are Appalachian versions of the old stories once collected in Europe, recast to fit the frontier culture of early America. Chase published many of these tales in his books, but his greatest joy came from re-telling them to kids. We arranged for him to do exactly that, in a two-room schoolhouse in the eastern Tennessee mountains, and recorded the entire presentation. The kids loved it, and so will you.
