Ever since my youth I have been drawn to the works of the three composers represented on this disc. An early favorite LP of mine by the fine bassoon soloist George Zuckerman introduced me many years ago to Corrette's Le Phénix and the C major quartet for bassoon and strings of Devienne. And Boismortier's Petites Sonates suivies d'une Chaconne for two bassoons was among the very first bassoon music that I owned. Between them, these composers produced a large body of wonderful works for the bassoon, representing a bit of a French love affair with the instrument in the 18th century. The bassoon was also popular as a solo instrument elsewhere in Europe during this time, but no other repertoire of the period matches the charm of these French works. Whether it is the 'inegal' possibilities of the music of Corrette and Boismortier (a style rather similar to the swinging of notes in jazz) or the Mozartian melodic turns of Devienne, this music is a joy to play and hear, and holds a special place in the bassoon repertory. I am pleased to be able to include many of my favorites on this disc, and hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
