This international ensemble of newly acquainted musicians and friends met in Shanghai, China last Spring 2012 for a brief and busy 10-day run of consecutive performances organized by co-founders Tom Pang (mandolin and vocals from Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, CN) and Adam Brooks Dudding (guitar and vocals from Nashville, TN, USA). Over that same period of time the ensemble also managed to record 20 songs in just 4 days with sound engineer Kim YongJun at Shanghai Acoustic Studio where they taught each other new songs, rehearsed the arrangements and recorded live, with everyone playing together in the same room, sometimes for the very first time. The recording also features Charles Butler (acclaimed progressive banjo/dobro player, composer - Nashville, TN), Shun Hu ("Shunzi" acclaimed electric bassist - Shanghai, CN), Hanneke Cassel (award-winning folk violinist, composer - Boston, MA), Jasmine Chen (internationally acclaimed Jazz vocalist, lyricist - Shanghai, CN) and Geoff Henderson (acclaimed upright bassist - Nashville, TN). Mixed and Mastered in Nashville, TN, USA in Winter 2013 at J-Studio by Kai Welch (Acclaimed instrumentalist and Abigail Washburn collaborator) and Erick Jaskowiak (Award-Winning sound engineer and producer), this collection of 11 songs offers elements and combinations of American art-forms like bluegrass, country, blues and jazz along with unique twists of Chinese folk and pop songs including a fine example of Mongolian throat-singing. In The Moment is an appropriate title for the Shanghai Newgrass Project's debut studio album. Listen and you'll hear, while it's occurring, a cross-cultural exchange of ideas and emotions, a learning of old styles and new approaches, anticipation and response, comfort and exploration.
