The Sixth Floor Trio creates and performs music that connects different styles, communities, and artistic disciplines. Formed by graduates of the Curtis Institute of Music in 2008, the Trio performs extensively throughout the United States in venues ranging from traditional concert halls to grunge bars and experimental spaces. Their vision places all musical traditions from around the world and across time on one continuum of the same great musical language, and the Trio's mission is to connect these traditions in a novel yet authentic way. From Bluegrass to Klezmer, Classical to Jazz, Ancient Music to Contemporary Rock - the guiding principle is "if we like it, we play it"! The trio also shares it's artistic passion and music-making with diverse audiences everywhere, from traditional concertgoers to those who've never heard of a bassoon. In addition to performing, the Trio makes great music accessible in innovative settings through it's special projects: ? Random Acts of Culture™, sponsored by the Knight Foundation, has taken the Trio across the United States in more than 200 surprise performances in public locations from Grandfather Mountain's "Mile High Swinging Bridge" to Stanford University humanities classes. ? GardenMusic, a festival of the extraordinary Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, is a home for classical, folk, and jazz musicians to collaborate with dancers, visual artists, actors, filmmakers, and the Garden to create beatiful art for all of Miami to enjoy. The Trio serves as Artistic Directors. ? Music of the People is a video series that chronicles the Trio's attempts to learn new musical styles from expert folk musicians around the world.
