STEVE KIMOCK BAND biography 2004 The Steve Kimock Band defies simple categorization. It's players are renowned artists with diverse musical influences and a shared love of stretching sonic boundaries. It's music is a kaleidoscope of innovative compositions and dazzling improvisations that range from the rush of exploratory fusion and funk, to the roar of psychedelic rock, to the whisper of a ballad so haunting and sweet that audiences fall silent under it's spell. It's live performances are incendiary marathons of musical creation and on-stage chemistry that are unlike anything else in music today. SKB guitarist Steve Kimock has dedicated his life to the mastery of his instruments and the exploration of new paradigms of rhythm, tone, and melody. Kimock has been at the leading edge of guitar-driven improvisational music for more than 25 years, consistently reinventing his art through hard work, imagination, and the creation of a new musical vocabulary. Joining Steve Kimock in the current line-up of SKB are Rodney Holmes (drums), Mitch Stein (guitar), Leo Traversa (bass) and Jim Kost (keyboards). Holmes is a Grammy award-winning drummer, recognized for his explosive power, graceful touch, and an unparalleled ability to play multiple rhythms simultaneously. He has performed with a diverse and talented mix of world-class musicians - from the Brecker Brothers to Santana to Wayne Shorter - and his unique approach to drumming is hugely influential in creating SKB's signature sound. Guitarist Mitch Stein's rich musical heritage and imaginative style provide the perfect foil for Kimock's fat-toned phrases. Schooled in jazz, classical and rock guitar, Stein is a creative player who has performed with the likes of David Sanborn, Chaka Chan, George Benson and Steve Gadd. Leo Traversa, considered one of the world's top bassists, has performed and recorded with a wide range of internationally-known artists, including Tania Maria, Ben E. King, Elaine Elias and Claudio Roditi. Jim Kost was trained at the Berklee College of Music, studied with jazz master Jaki Byard at The New England Conservatory, and has played with such greats as Philly Joe Jones, Woody Shaw, and Branford Marsalis. Live performances of the Steve Kimock Band are the stuff of legends. Audiences come to experience the vivid musical imagination of the players, celebrate the power of sound that moves the soul, and share in the sheer thrill of new music created nightly. Widely admired for the quality of it's live sound engineering, SKB is one of the most frequently-recorded touring acts today. STEVE KIMOCK Performing nationally for over 25 years, Steve Kimock, a self-taught innovator, started his musical career in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania at the age of twelve. Resisting the usual trappings of a 'normal' life at an early age, Kimock focused on his music, often practicing for eight hours or more each day. This routine began when his high school principal let him practice guitar in the hallway, on the condition that he at least show up for school. Because of his unwavering dedication and discipline to his craft, Steve Kimock has become one of today's modern guitar masters. With his innovations in the field of instrument, amplification and speaker design (his stage rig incorporates much of his own design), and his fearless pursuit of new paradigms of rhythm, tone, and melody, Kimock continues to evolve his exquisite sound, through both emotive improvisations and inventive compositions. His diverse musical influences are wide-ranging: from John Coltrane to Ali Akbar Khan, David Lindley to Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis to Roy Buchanan. Still, Kimock has created and maintained a sound that is truly his own. To understand Kimock and his musical roots one must go back to the mid-70s when Kimock and his band at the time, the folk-rock group The Goodman Brothers, relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1979 The Goodman Brothers dissolved, and after a stint with Martin Fierro in the salsa band the Underdogs, Kimock joined the Heart of Gold Band featuring Keith & Donna Godchaux and drummer Greg Anton. Then 1984 Kimock co-founded, with Greg Anton, the quintessential psychedelic rock ensemble Zero. With Zero, Kimock toured for 16 years and co-produced six albums. His work with Zero exposed Kimock to a national audience and a loyal fan base, attracted to his blistering improvisations and inspired compositions, soon began to build. In January 1998, Kimock and Zero band mate Bobby Vega joined with Zappa alumnus Ray White and talented drummer Alan Hertz to form KVHW. This legendary band blazed around the country, receiving the accolades of both fans and critics alike, until their untimely break-up in December 1999. Undaunted, Kimock formed the Steve Kimock Band and since February 2000, SKB has continued to dazzle audiences and build on the Kimock legacy. In December 2000 Grammy award winning drummer Rodney Holmes joined SKB. The Kimock-Holmes collaboration has stretched the boundaries for both artists; through their imaginative compositions and the band's joyful camaraderie, SKB has taken off to new heights. During his tenure in the Bay Area it was quite natural for Kimock to cross paths with members of the Grateful Dead family. Over the years, besides being touted as Jerry Garcia's 'favorite unknown guitar player,' Kimock enjoyed touring and/or recording with The Heart of Gold Band (1979-80), Bob Weir's Kingfish (1986), Merl Saunders and the Rainforest Band (1990-91), Vince Welnick's Missing Man Formation (1996-97), Phil Lesh and Friends (1998-99), and The Other Ones (1998-2000). In addition to those enriching experiences, Kimock has also toured and/or recorded with (among others) Jerry Joseph's Little Women (1988), The Psychedelic Guitar Circus (1993), Steve Kimock & Friends (94-present), and Everybody Slides (1996). Kimock has also been featured on the two most recent recordings by Bruce Hornsby (Big Swing Face and Here Come the Noisemakers), and toured as featured guitarist with Bruce Hornsby and his band in the fall of 2002. Though SKB is now Kimock's primary musical concentration, he continues to enjoy other outlets such as acoustic performances, which have allowed him to play some of his favorite instruments publicly: stunning custom guitars, vintage lap steels and arch tops, Hawaiian guitars, and even an octave mandolin. These special performances have also offered Kimock the opportunity to connect with his folk roots and with some old musical friends. Look for Kimock to appear at the New York Guitar Festival in January 2004 for a very special solo performance. Recently, Kimock relocated to his home state of Pennsylvania to be closer to his family and his SKB band mates. With a home studio at his disposal, Kimock (and the band) will undoubtedly be able to work with more focus and drive than ever before; SKB's first DVD, titled Steve Kimock Band: Live at the Gothic Theatre, is due out this February and their highly anticipated debut studio release will hit streets in late spring. RODNEY HOLMES Inspired by a home life filled with music, Rodney Holmes took up the drums when joining the junior band in the 4th grade. By the time he reached high school in Westchester, New York, he'd already decided to become a professional musician. When he graduated, although he'd earned a music scholarship to Long Island University he chose to go out on his own. And influenced by the likes of such great jazz drummers as Max Roach, Art Blakey, Kenny Clark, and Tony Williams, as well as drummers like Billy Cobham, Steve Gadd, and John Bonham of Led Zeppelin; Holmes began getting jazz gigs and recording sessions. Although he was not part of the inner circle in the New York music scene, Holmes' talent soon caught the attention of keyboardist, composer and musical visionary, Clyde Criner, who taught at LIU and the New England Conservatory. Dr. Criner took Rodney under his wing and put together a group featuring the young drummer. It was a
