The Anatomy of Melancholy, the violinist Emily Stewart's debut project, is based on the work of the same name by the writer Robert Burton from 1621. Burton's work deals with the idea that human existence and our perception are primarily shaped by melancholy; this motif is examined for physical, psychological and philosophical aspects. Similar to the book, Stewart's music program is a collection of miniatures that are conceptually linked by the common theme of melancholy. She draws inspiration from the abundance of her own, diverse background: Here you will find sounds from the classical, the Great American Songbook, Celtic folk music and free improvisation. The music - whether small works from classical music, folk songs or original compositions - was skillfully arranged by her for the trio with cellist Lukas Lauermann and double bass player Philipp Kienberger; spoken poems and vignettes from Burton's book and from his own pen are intertwined with the music to a seductive whole. More than a purely musical performance, The Anatomy of Melancholy is able to put the listener in a world full of longing and memory.
