The image is as often used for comedy as for romance in today's world. Today a serenade need not be a romantic ballad. Whether played by a small ensemble or sung by a large chorus, a serenade is simply beautiful, reflective music. Yet, there is something charming in the image of a love-struck balladeer singing to win his beloved's heart.
