Artist: Vanessa Mitchell
Title: Nice to Meet You

Singer-songwriter Vanessa Mitchell never meant to write songs-she was too busy earning a living as a diamond setter & jewelry designer, acting in indie films, writing a novel and traveling. Based in San Diego, CA, Vanessa commuted weekly to her LA apartment, which led to a lot of empty time in the car. 'I'd be driving late at night twice a week and would come up with these scenarios in my head. They would either be based on an image I've seen (e.g., 'Worth It All' was inspired by a Marc Jacobs perfume ad) or romantic heartache ('When I Look At You' was inspired by the fact that I can relate to every girl in the world when a guy we like just doesn't seem to 'see it.') Often though, I'd get inspired by listening late at night to those love song radio stations where people call in and dedicate a song to someone for all sorts of juicy reasons. Love is just so much fun to write about because on one hand it can be emotional & complicated, and on the other, euphoric & invigorating. I believe it's important for every artist to allow him/herself to become vulnerable in the process because that's where you find sincerity. When I need to be inspired, I look out the window and let my mind fall into that scary place of 'what if' and feel the emotion follow. That's why it works. I would never want to live with all the drama I write about, but it's like watching a movie with all the ups and downs of life-so much fun to watch someone else go through it.' When asked why she titled her debut album 'Nice To Meet You,' she replied, 'Well... anytime someone meets another person, one of them is bound to say 'It's nice to meet you.' This album is about relationships that started with those words. Plus, with this being my debut album, it's a way of formally initiating a relationship with my listeners.' The Recording Process: This album began with dozens of recorded lyrics and melodies on a digital recorder during long commutes from San Diego to LA. Once refined in Garageband, Vanessa set out to find a guitarist who could design expressive guitar arrangements. Enter: Cory Dillon! Several guitarists couldn't 'see' what Vanessa was going for, but Cory was perfect. They spent months making recordings in his living room. Inspired by up and comers at Hotel Café in Hollywood, Vanessa reached out to one of their producers. Enter: Co-producer, Jon Mattox (The Young Dubliners). Recorded at Bright Orange Studios in Los Angeles, the demos came to life. Vanessa spent hours every week taking copious notes on each song's progress. She and Jon shared genius moments during every recording session, fueling her desire to turn this pipe dream of holding a finished album in her hands into reality. The final stage was mastering. Enter: Matt Forger (Michael Jackson & Paul McCartney). After nine months from start to finish, the baby was born. Vanessa's collection of songs became an ALBUM.
