We recently interviewed singer/songwriter Van Duren on PULSE! about the reissuing of his seminal album Are You Serious? and the first time wide release of Idiot Optimism, both from Omnivore Records, after their recording over 40 years ago. You can still check out that interview here and here.

For those wondering what Van Duren is working on at the moment, one of his projects is performing and releasing music as a duo with Vicki Loveland as Loveland Duren from their home base in Memphis. Loveland Duren have recently announced a new album for 2021 titled Any Such Thing, and to celebrate that announcement have made public a single and video from the album, "Within Crying Distance" where the imagery of a river carrying humanity along speaks well to our times.

The tracks for the single were recorded at Ardent and at Royal Studios, then mixed at Scott Bomar’s downtown Electrophonic Studios with veteran engineer Adam Hill at the console.

The cast of players include Ian Duren (drums) and Adam Holton (bass) along with Van Duren on guitars, and UK pianist Liam Grundy. One overdub session at Royal (engineered by Boo Mitchell) added the Reverend Charles Hodges on Hammond B3 organ to the track. The session concluded with Vicki Loveland’s lead vocal.

The companion video for “Within Crying Distance” was conceived, filmed, and edited by veteran cinematographer/director Kim Bledsoe Lloyd and features Vicki and Van, the River, and actor Thais Lloyd.

Any Such Thing will be released on vinyl and on digital platforms in early 2021, and it features all new original Loveland Duren songs.
