A Boogie Showcases Emotional Storytelling in Single "Did Me Wrong"
Written by Augustus McGhee
New York is well known for birthing some of the greatest Hip-Hop artists of all time. From Notorious B.I.G. to Jay-Z and Nas, the lineage of extremely talented rappers coming from the neighborhoods of NYC continues to expand as time goes by. A Boogie, officially known as “A Boogie wit da Hoodie” and originally from the Bronx, New York, has cemented his stature when it comes to that same lineage. Although different from other rappers in terms of style, cadence, imagery, and delivery, A Boogie has captured the eyes of many individuals across the world through great branding and fantastic music.
A Boogie's melodic flow makes him stand out from other artists in his category, such as Lil Baby and Lil TJay who also carry similar styles of flow within their music. On September 8th, 2023, A Boogie released a 3-song EP titled, B4 BOA, standing for “Before Better Off Alone.” This title represents the time period before his anticipated new project “Better Off Alone” as he prepares his audience for the release of his fifth official studio album. This rising star, who is also a member of the esteemed “Highbridge The Label,” continues to show his talents and unique style through this single.
One particular song off of this EP titled "Did Me Wrong" is especially noteworthy. Aside from the melodies presented through his cadence, the production behind the track as a whole is beyond polished. Throughout the song, he seamlessly transitions between various flows, calls out the individuals who imitate his style, and dismisses his haters and past lovers who have traumatized him through past experiences. He also tells multiple stories through the song, speaking about times when he watched his friends pass away in front of him and being sentenced to prison after having such a strong bond. These emotions he continues to present in his music captivates his audience the most. From his first studio album Artist in 2016 to this single, A Boogie showcases the reason why he is one of the best artists coming out of New York.
The marketing and branding behind A Boogie is far from just a simple written plan. From the late 2010’s, The International Artist (referencing his 3rd studio album International Artist in 2018) maps out to his fans that love leads to heartbreak and proves this from his personal experiences. At the same time, however, his melodies and flashy image captivates their eyes, and also inspires young kids from his hometown to focus on their goals rather than unnecessary emotional issues at a young age. Understanding A Boogie’s cycle of releasing music leads to a few questions. Will any of these songs off of his recent EP feature on the next album as well? Is “Did Me Wrong” on the path to becoming the hit single from B4 BOA? Most importantly, will this single or the entire EP create enough buzz for A Boogie to keep his placement as one of the top New York artists today?
Due to his famous stature and team behind him, it can be believed that this single will be one of his bests down the line. Performing this single will present the proper experience and feeling that die hard fans have been longing for since his first few projects, due to his versatile, yet original sound that few to none have tried before. The instrumentation behind his vocals easily creates a sense of emotion, whether it pertains to sadness, happiness, loneliness, or all of the above. The fact that this single is able to properly express emotion is enough to give positive credit to their work on this project. It is also well known that A Boogie is currently on tour, which adds more promotion onto his upcoming album. His next performance is October 28th in Newark, New Jersey, at the Prudential Center. It can only be certain that many of his hometown fans will be in attendance with his large fanbase and amazing talent.
