This album gives voice to the hard struggles of the working people of an earlier time along the Mississippi River. Set in the region that gave birth to Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, a stone's throw from Hannibal, Missouri, the album paints a picture of the river, and how it flowed through the veins of the people who lived and worked along it's banks: factory workers, kids growing up the hard way, teenagers in fast cars, families in crisis, dispossessed tenant farmers and sharecroppers, and runaway slaves. These are the voices of hardstrapped people fighting just to keep their heads above water as they search for their own version of the American Dream. In a sense, the songs are about a desperate longing for freedom and a better life, but maybe if the truth be told, they're just a gritty reminder of where I came from and who I am.
