'Holy Water and Whiskey' is an Albuquerque vocal trio that plays acoustic traditional, folk, bluegrass, gospel, cowboy, etc and some select "whiskey" tunes. The group bases it's arrangements on solid and straightforward lead singing and instrumental playing, and then adding the rich harmonies that have become the trademark of their music. The group consists of Maggie Washburne on bass, Scott Altenbach on guitar, and Bruce Washburne on guitar and banjo. Bruce and Maggie met in a band in Hawaii in 1977, were married, and have been playing music together ever since. In 2003 they joined forces with Scott, Colorado native and musician, and the trio has been performing together since then. Holy Water & Whiskey has become a popular group in New Mexico, and has played at and been very well received at many public and private events in and around the Southwest. They all got their start playing and performing during the folk movement of the 60's, and their musical tastes have continued to evolve since then to now include many other acoustic and vocal styles. Their latest CD, "Spirits of All Kinds" includes a cross section of the kinds of songs that the group plays. Using the strong vocal leads of Scott and Maggie as the foundation for most of their selections, the group adds their own special blend of close harmony singing that has become their trademark. Audiences consistently report that those harmonies and the interesting choice of songs are the primary aspects of the music that keeps them coming back for more. "Spirits of All Kinds" includes some favorite gospel, contemporary folk and traditional songs as well as three original tunes written by Maggie. The original tunes include "Ill Wind", about a successful divorce, "Grandma's Angel", a song that tells of an experience that Maggie's grandmother had when she returned to the orphanage where she was raised, and "Laugh When the Sun Won't Shine" is a blues tune that reminds us of what we already know: a good man/woman is hard to find. Their first CD "Better Late than Never" has been very well received, and "Spirits of All Kinds" continues in that same tradition.
