I'm a Teacher, Not a Babysitter is a collection of 13 songs that reflect the day-to-day experiences of teachers and child care providers. Stuart Stotts is a singer, storyteller, and author from Madison, Wisconsin. He's sung with children for nearly 25 years, but this unique project is not songs for kids, but songs for adults that communicate the day-to-day pleasures and difficulties of working in the child care field. Stuart worked with the Wisconsin Early Childhood Association for nearly a year to interview providers, parents, licensors, and others within the system to get a sense of many perspectives, issues, and stories. These songs are the result. Studies show that over 75% of children under five are in some kind of child-care for a portion of the week. Advances in brain research demonstrate clearly that the most important time for children's growth and learning is in the first five years of their lives. However, teachers who work with young children are paid the least, and respected the least, of all educational professionals. This recording addresses this fundamental paradox in society. The songs range from humorous (Use Your Words, Don't Give Kids Everything They Want) to poignant (Quiet in the Infant Room, Powerless Children Need Powerful Friends) to political (It's About the Money, Put Children First). The title song sums up the principal perspective of the recording, while Crazy 'bout Me recognizes that children need more than the basics from care. They also need people who love and delight in their growth. I'm A Teacher, Not a Babysitter opens a door to a world that's largely invisible to most of us. It's a world that is critical to our future, and the well being of children everywhere.
